Background
The 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, held in Morocco, marked a pivotal moment in women’s sports on the continent. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Local Organizing Committee sought to create an unforgettable opening ceremony, celebrating unity and highlighting the critical role of African women in shaping the continent’s future.

The goal was to stage an event that not only showcased the richness of African culture but also emphasized women’s empowerment, while drawing global attention to this historic tournament.

Solution
The opening ceremony unfolded in three stunning acts, each telling a part of the story of African women and their integral role in the continent’s journey.
Act 1: “Celebrating the Women of the Continent”
The ceremony opened with the joyful “zagharit,” as women in traditional costumes paraded, symbolizing the beauty and the nurturing spirit of African women.
Act 2: “A Concert of Unity”
Moroccan pop star Manal Benchlikha performed with ten dancers, celebrating the transition of African women into modernity with songs like “NIYA,” “CALL ME,” and “SLAY,” all while showcasing unity through dance.
Act 3: “Tribute to the Nations”
The final act honored the twelve participating nations, concluding with a stunning pyrotechnic display that marked the historic opening of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
RESULTS
The opening ceremony featured 30 women in stunning, vibrant costumes, 100 carpet holders, 48 Moroccan flower carriers, 22 percussionists, and a performance by Manal Benchlikha. The parade and festivities, hosted by Jalal Bouzrara, captivated the audience and set the tone for a historic tournament, creating a lasting impression of unity, pride, and empowerment.
